aftershave

What is after shave and how to use it?

The term ‘aftershave’ can be a little ambiguous. Most people when they use the term actually mean fragrance or cologne. Originally after-shaves were created to provide an astringent and antiseptic effect on the skin to prevent infection from nicks and cuts, commonly caused by blunt blades. After shave was also splashed onto the skin after shaving to close the pores and fragrance the skin. Traditional fragrances such as Sandalwood, Cedarwood or Lime were often added.

Traditionally these lotions or splashes were alcohol-based aftershaves and whilst undoubtedly refreshing, would usually sting or smart when applied. This sting was perceived as part of the manly ritual of shaving! These days of course we use after shave balms or lotions to prevent the ‘ouch’ factor by soothing and calming irritation rather than enhancing it! Modern hygiene is so much better and cuts are less frequent so an aftershave product will be much more about conditioning the skin and preventing shaving rash. They often contain only a very slight fragrance so as not to compete with any cologne or fragrance used.

However, many people still refer to gentleman’s cologne as ‘after shave’ which it really isn’t. Cologne can of course be used after the shaving ritual but not directly onto a freshly shaved face.

How to use an ‘after shave’ product

· After shaving the skin with your favourite shave cream, gel or soap, rinse the face thoroughly with warm water to remove any residue. Pat dry with a clean towel

· Choose either a balm, lotion or cream specifically made for after shaving.

· Warm a small amount of the aftershave balm in your hands and apply this all over the shaved area.

How to use a cologne or fragrance

· Chose the fragrance of your choice and one that suits your personality and lifestyle. Many men use several different fragrances, one for each occasions or mood. Stronger. deeper fragrances are usually more appropriate for evening wear while lighter, more citrus fragrances are better for day time.

· The important thing with fragrance is not to overdo it. Although it’s important to smell nice, applying too much will make you stand out for all the wrong reasons.

· Spray your cologne into the room and walk through it. 2 squirts is enough. Alternatively dab a little behind your ear or into your hair but keep it minimal.

· A good fragrance should last all day but be subtle and sexy not overpowering.
